- A collection of application programs that have specific purposes

Characteristics

- Dependent on the user or the department that wants to use it

- Each department develops its own file system application

Advantages

- It can take faster and automatic back-up of database stored in files of computer-based systems.

- It can store data compactly.

- Computer-based systems provide enhanced data retrieval techniques to retrieve data stored in files easily.

- It is easy to edit any information stored in computers in form of files.

- Data stored in files of computer-based systems can be shared among multiple users at a same time.

- It is more efficient than a manual record processing.

Disadvantages

Aspects	Explanation
1) Data Isolation	There is no relationship between two separated files
2) Data Redundancy	Same data is held by different programs
3) File Incompatibility	File Format normally depends on programming language being used
4) File Dependence	File structure normally depends on programming code
5) Fixed Queries of Application Program	Programs are written to satisfy particular functions and any new requirement needs a new program
